LAFFlines #1: Drinse

Note from Abby

Lime Maple Chili with Butternut Squast and Black Beans

Lime-Maple Chili: 1 can of drinsed black beans + 1 ½ cups diced butternut squash + 1 cup LAFF protein crumbles + 16 oz (1 jar) of salsa + 1 tablespoon lime juice + 3 tablespoons maple syrup. Cook in crockpot on low for six hours.

Last week, in addition to lime-maple chili and butternut mole waffles and creamy marinara pasta and this website, I made a portmanteau: DRINSE. As in, “The first step of making chili is to drinse one can of black beans. Pour the drinsed beans into a crockpot.”

DRINSE (verb): To drain and rinse food from a can.

DRINSE. I hadn’t thought of the word until I heard it come from my own mouth. I spontaneously said it while filming a five minute video for the website home page. LAFFkitchen videos are all one take. No do-overs for mess-ups or awkwardness. Spillage—whether it’s of the culinary or linguistic variety—stays in.

Did DRINSE originate with the Mad Hatter peppers I brought home from the Glade Road Growing farm share in October? If I hadn’t gotten the peppers, I wouldn’t have thumbed through my copy of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. If I hadn’t thumbed through Wonderland, I wouldn’t have seen mimsy and chortle and vorpal, frumious, galumph, and other jabberwock that makes complete sense despite being utter nonsense. It was Lewis Carroll himself who invented the phrase “portmanteau word” to describe a blend of two words.

Found my old Alice in Wonderland coloring book this week. Turns out that coloring the Mad Hatter is an antidote to madness.

Who knows whether the Mad Hatter peppers sparked my impromptu neologism. But here at LAFFkitchen, I’m all about blending, drinsing, and experimenting in the name of frabjous food.
